Oh Muna, you talk a lot of rubbish!šŸ˜‚ Yes, baby, I love to be a little extra! But I'll explain, so keep reading!

Well, in a short summary, the hair's love language simply refers to hair porosity. Hair porosity is the hair's ability to retain moisture for hours. I call it the hair's love language because our hair porosity determines the kinds of products we use on our hair. Using the wrong products for the right hair porosity is counterproductive, hence the necessity to be knowledgeable about your hair porosity.

Types of Hair Porosity

  1. Low Porosity: For low porosity hair, it takes more time to get moisture into the hair and down the scalp because the hair shaft is not raised, and for this same reason, the hair takes longer to dry out, hence retains the most moisture. The ability of low porosity hair to retain moisture over a long period of time makes the hair less prone to frizzy ends and breakage, because of the moisture and oil locked in the hair. Low Porosity Hair is usually thick, especially towards the root. Low porosity hair has the most shrinkage because of the hair's density.

  2. Normal Porosity: Normal Porosity hair takes an even amount of time to get and lock moisture into the hair. It is not very prone to breakage or frizzy ends either, but however, it does not retain moisture for as long as low porosity hair does.

  3. High Porosity: High porosity hair lets in moisture easily, but lets it out as quickly as it comes in. It doesn't retain moisture for long, hence more prone to frizzy ends and breakage. Due to its inability to reatin moisture for long, high porosity hair is always dry. Dry hair is extremely prone to dandruff (which is basically dead scalp cells falling off) which causes itchy scalp.

How Do I Check My Hair Porosity?

The hair porosity test is the easiest and affordable hair test to do. It does not require a hair professional to do it for you.

Take out a hair strand or two from your hair (you don't need a huge chunk of your hair so you have to be gentle with the scissors). Place the hair strand in a cup or bowl of water (also, the water doesn't have to be big). Let it sit for about 2-3 minutes and watch what happens.

Low Porosity Hair: The hair stays afloat. Even if you try pushing it down with your fingers, it comes back up or at least floats in the upper one-third of the container. Its moisture absorbing rate is poor, but retaining power is excellent. This shows that pouring water on your hair takes a longer time to get the water to your roots and scalp. Don't panic. Low hair porosity is the best because it locks moisture in for the longest, protecting you from frizzy ends, breakage, and even dandruff!

Normal Porosity Hair: The hair neither floats nor sinks. It swims around midway inside the container. Both the moisture absorbing rate and retaining power is average. It locks as much moisture as needed, but doesn't retain the moisture so long enough. It doesn't take time to get water into your roots and out, but it locks as much moisture as needed to protect you from basic breakage, frizzy ends, dryness, or dandruff.

High Porosity Hair: Your hair sinks! It goes to the bottom of the container and remains there, and even if you try to push it up, it doesn't stay up. Its moisture absorbing rate is excellent but retaining power is very low. It dries out as fast as it lets the moisture in. Don't panic either. There are still disadvantages for the other hair porosity type, so don't be discouraged. However, there is need for a little more extra effort to keep your hair moisture all the time to prevent breakage, dryness, and dandruff.

Understanding your hair's porosity is understanding your hair's love language, and that basically solves 70% of your hair problems (the other 30% is the consistency required in taking care of your hair). Having an understanding of your hair porosity gives you a more knowledgeable insight on what kind of products, oils, and organics to use on your hair. Understanding and knowing your hair porosity is more important than knowing about your hair type (the 4c, 3a, 1b brouhaha). Your hair type only defines your curls. Your hair porosity and how you treat your hair based on its porosity determines the health of your hair! Frizzy ends and breakage lead to stunted growth, which makes your hair seem like it is not growing. In growing your hair to a certain desired length, you want to consider length retention, and you certainly cannot retain your hair when it is constantly breaking.

In the next blog post, I will write about how to select products and oils to use on your hair based on the different hair porosity. You will want to wait this out!šŸ˜‰ See you in my next post, and don't forget to share this post with every lady in your life! You might just be helping someone who's about to give up on her God-given preeetttyy curls!šŸ˜
