There are a lot of misconceptions about natural hair. I grew up hearing and believing some of them, and I'm sure you did too. Well, growing older and gaining knowledge and interest in my natural hair has made me fish out these lies and deliver myself from that sad mentality, and I'm here to deliver you too. Don't be shy if you are one of the perpetrators of such myths. We learn every day, so you are here to unlearn that lie!😂

  • 4c hair can't be lengthy: That is a lie that should never exist! Every hair type, texture, density, curl pattern, whatever it is, can grow long. The length of any hair depends on the hair retention ability. Your hair never stops growing. You just don't maintain your hair length because you are either rough-combing your hair which causes a lot of breakages, or your hair is damaged (either heat damage or use of certain products unfavorable to your hair). This myth is mostly spread because of the shrinkage 4c hair undergoes, making it look like it never grows.

  • Dandruff increases hair growth: I can't believe I also believed this lie😂. Dandruffs are huge scales of dead hair cells caused by dry hair. Dandruff is different from hair dirt. Your hair can be clean but still have dandruff on it, and your hair can be dirty but without dandruff. Dandruff doesn't improve hair growth. If anything, it inhibits hair growth because it clogs the scalp, preventing the circulation of air and moisture that stimulates hair growth and improves the health of the hair. Dandruff is prevented by constantly moisturizing the hair, even with braids and protective styling on. For the treatment of dandruff, you can use a DIY option of onion juice treatment or see a dermatologist or a hair expert.

  • Natural hair is nappy: No dear, your hair is nappy because you are not moisturizing it. Your hair is not difficult to maintain, you have difficulty practicing consistency with your hair routine. You don't stop taking your bath because your bathroom is far. You also won't stop eating because your pot is dirty. You wash the pot and make a meal. Same with your natural hair. Don't conclude it's difficult to maintain when you don't even know how to maintain it, you've not tried and you're not making plans to. Learn how to take care of your hair, moisturize it, have a good daily routine for your hair, and don't forget to deep condition your hair!

  • You don't have to wash Natural Hair: Girl, don't say this outside😂, PLEASE! Some people believe they don't have to wash their natural hair, especially because washing the hair causes shrinkage. First of all, we are children of God, God's babies. Cleanliness is next to godliness, so please wash that scalp!😂 Secondly, leaving dirt on your hair only causes dirt build up which clogs up your hair pores, thus inhibiting growth because fresh nutrients can't get into your hair. Also, shrinkage doesn't mean your hair is growing. As your hair grows, your former full hair length becomes the length of your present shrinkage. That's a lot of growth girl! Embrace it!

Here are better truths about Natural hair you should believe:

  1. Dear black woman, your hair is beautiful! Take look at that crown sitting gorgeously on your hair, just like the queen you are! Someone once said, "4c hair grows upwards and not downward because that's a crown oconstantly reminding us our royalty. We are Queens!"

  2. Your hair can be worn in any style (from flat-ironed to scrumptious afro). 4c hair is extremely versatile, so love on it!

  3. Wearing protective styles (twists, braids) often hold well and last longer. It also improves growth because it makes you manipulate your hair less, especially when you are at home!
